DNA Databasing – Regional Offender DNA Index System (RODIS)

DNA analysis is performed using state of the art technology that is capable of obtaining DNA profiles from many types of crime scene evidence including touch DNA (contact DNA) often encountered in property crimes. With recent technological advances it is possible to obtain DNA from crime scene items such as fingerprints, eating utensils, writing implements, clothing, objects with abrasive contact, smoking implements, drinking containers, steering wheels and door handles.  Most of these items can now be processed using standard procedures allowing for rapid turnaround time to obtain results.  The DNA profiles from crime scene evidence and suspects is then uploaded into the RODIS searchable software.   The system works very similar to CODIS and NDIS (National DNA Database) and the national fingerprint database (IAFIS).  RODIS compares the DNA profiles from crime scene evidence to the evidence from other crimes in the database as well as the DNA profiles of suspects in the database.  The DNA profiles from evidence items can be linked across crime scenes creating a web that tracks the activities of individual suspects.
